Fall is officially here. The days are getting shorter, schedules are getting fuller, and the holiday season will be here before we know it.
While this time of year can make us want to push harder to stay on track, October is a great reminder that more isn’t always better—especially when it comes to exercise.
This month’s wellness tip? Start treating recovery as part of your training, not time away from it.
Your Body Gets Stronger Between Workouts
Strength training provides the stimulus your body needs to adapt, but the actual rebuilding and recovery process happens outside of your workout.
That means your rest days matter.
Constantly pushing through fatigue or feeling like you need to work out every single day isn’t necessarily going to get you to your goals faster. Giving your body adequate time to recover can help you come back to your next strength training session ready to perform at your best.
At Perfect Form LA, we want you to train hard—but we also want you to train smart.
Recovery Is More Than Taking a Day Off
A recovery day doesn’t necessarily mean spending the entire day on the couch.
Walking, mobility work, stretching, staying hydrated, eating enough protein and nutrients, and prioritizing sleep can all support your body’s recovery between workouts.
Recovery can also include intentionally slowing down. Fall tends to bring busier schedules, less daylight, and the beginning of holiday commitments. Your body doesn’t distinguish between stress from a hard workout and stress from everything else happening in your life.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your fitness is recognize when your body needs a little more rest.
Don’t Underestimate Sleep
You can have a great training program and dialed-in nutrition, but consistently cutting your sleep short can make it harder to feel and perform your best.
Instead of only thinking about how many workouts you can fit into your week, take a look at your sleep habits too.
Can you go to bed 30 minutes earlier? Put your phone down a little sooner? Create a nighttime routine that helps you actually wind down?
Small changes can add up.
Make Active Recovery Part of Your Fall Routine
If you’re someone who has a hard time doing “nothing,” active recovery can be a great middle ground.
Take a walk outside. Spend a few minutes on mobility. Do some gentle stretching. Or take advantage of recovery tools that help you slow down and give your body some extra attention.
At Perfect Form LA in Studio City, our Recovery Room includes an infrared sauna, cold plunge, and Normatec compression sleeves, giving our clients another way to incorporate intentional recovery into their overall wellness routine.
But remember: recovery tools are an addition to the fundamentals—not a replacement for sleep, nutrition, hydration, and adequate rest.
Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You
Some days you’ll walk into the gym feeling great and ready to push. Other days, your body may need something different.
That’s one of the benefits of working with an experienced personal trainer rather than following a one-size-fits-all workout.
At Perfect Form LA, our coaches get to know you. In our semi-private training and 1:1 personal training sessions, we can adjust your workout based on your experience, goals, limitations, and how you’re feeling that day.
Training intelligently doesn’t mean every workout has to be your hardest workout.
The PFLA Takeaway
As we head deeper into fall, remember that rest and recovery aren’t signs that you’re doing less—they’re part of doing it well.
Strength training creates the challenge. Nutrition gives your body the resources it needs. Sleep and recovery give it the opportunity to adapt.
You need all of them.
At Perfect Form LA, we offer personalized strength training, semi-private training, 1:1 personal training, nutrition coaching, and premium recovery in Studio City, Los Angeles to help you build a stronger body for the long term.
This October, keep showing up and working hard—but don’t forget to give your body the recovery it needs to keep doing it.
