Ask a Trainer: What Would You Tell Someone Who Is Just Getting Started on Their Wellness Journey?

Head Coach Alec Penix on the mindset shift that makes wellness sustainable: focus on consistency, not perfection. Start small, build strength, and don't go it alone.

Ask a Trainer: What Would You Tell Someone Who Is Just Getting Started on Their Wellness Journey?

One of the most common questions we get at Perfect Form LA is:

“What advice would you give someone who is just getting started on their wellness journey?”

As a personal trainer, my answer is always the same: focus on consistency, not perfection.

Many people begin their fitness journey feeling motivated and ready to make a complete lifestyle overhaul. They want to work out every day, eat perfectly, and see results immediately. While the enthusiasm is great, this approach often leads to burnout.

Instead, focus on building habits you can maintain long-term.

1. Start Small

You don’t need to train six days per week to see results. Start with two or three workouts each week and commit to showing up consistently. Small actions repeated over time create lasting results.

2. Focus on Strength

Many people start their fitness journey focused only on weight loss. While body composition changes are often a goal, strength training helps build muscle, improve energy levels, increase confidence, and support long-term health.

3. Don’t Do It Alone

Having support and accountability can make all the difference. Whether it’s a coach, trainer, workout partner, or structured fitness program, surrounding yourself with the right people helps you stay on track when motivation fades.

The Bottom Line

The best fitness program is the one you can stick with.

If you’re searching for a private gym near me, personal training in Studio City, semi-private personal training in Los Angeles, or a fitness coaching program that provides accountability and support, Perfect Form LA is designed to help you build sustainable habits and long-term results.

Remember: You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep showing up.
